The Paradox of the Active User is a relatively new concept that has gained traction in recent years. It states that high user activity does not automatically equate to a positive user experience. On the contrary, engaged users may very well have a negative attitude towards the product because they use it more frequently and are particularly annoyed by usability weaknesses.

Origin

The term was coined by UX experts and researchers in recent years, without a specific original publication being clearly defined.

Application in UX and UI design

Data from user research must not be misinterpreted. Frequent use does not necessarily mean user satisfaction. UX and UI experts should therefore critically examine quantitative data and always back it up with qualitative UX research.
